Program aims to get women into iron industry

CERRITOS, Calif. (KABC) -- There's a new pilot program in Orange County aimed at getting more women into iron working.

Ironworkers Local 433 is working with Cerritos College to offer the free training to women. The union says out of about 2,000 active iron workers in Southern California only 9 are women.

Instructors say those who finish will get apprenticeships -- working on a real construction site by early May.

Eyewitness News Reporter Eileen Frere shows us the training's not for the faint of heart, it's physically grueling. Watch her report above.
