Crews battling 4-alarm fire in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) -- A 4-alarm fire at a pallet yard in Riverside sent huge plumes of smoke into the air and then spread onto a nearby field.

The blaze was reported just after 3 p.m. Monday in the area of Main Street and Garner Road, between the Santa Ana River bottom and Interstate 215, according to the Riverside Fire Department.

The fire started in a metal shop before spreading to pallets. Amid high winds, the fire jumped Garner Road and spread onto a nearby field.

A total of 22 acres burned in the blaze.

Intense flames ripped through the pallet yard, but crews were eventually able to gain the upper hand. By 6 p.m., the fire was mostly white smoke.

Businesses in the area were evacuated as a precaution.

No injuries have been reported.

Winds persisted late in the afternoon, but they were decreasing.
