Sean Penn receives special 'Oscar' award during visit to Ukraine

UKRAINE (KABC) -- A few days after the Oscars, actor Sean Penn has been confirmed to be in Ukraine, where he received a symbolic award during a visit to Kyiv.

Penn won the Oscar for best supporting actor for his role in "One Battle After Another," but he wasn't at the ceremony to accept it. On Wednesday, it was learned that he is in Ukraine.

During his visit, the CEO of Ukrainian Railways presented Penn with an Oscar-shaped award made from material salvaged from a damaged railcar.

"This is from the railcar that was damaged by the Russians. The metals survived, so we put some words here, very special to us. It's not golden but it's very real and from the bottom of our hearts," the presenter said as Penn accepted the award and embraced him.

"These are all treasures, thank you," Penn responded.

Penn was in Kyiv to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In 2022, Penn gave the Ukrainian president one of his own Oscars during an earlier visit.
