Car found amid search for father, teen girl linked to newborn death in Monterey County
An Amber Alert for the teen was issued on Sunday.
MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KABC) -- New details have emerged in the search for a fugitive father and his 14-year-old daughter wanted in connection with the death of her newborn baby in Monterey County.
The California Highway Patrol said Wednesday that investigators located the vehicle the pair had been traveling in. No additional details about where the vehicle was found were immediately provided.
Diana Galvez Ortega was last seen Friday at about 2 a.m. in Salinas with her father, 38 year-old-Sergio Galvez Perez.
Perez is accused of impregnating Ortega and concealing her from law enforcement.
On behalf of the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, an Amber Alert was issued on Sunday in Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Kern, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego, Orange, and Imperial counties.
On Aug. 1, at approximately 8:30 a.m., fire personnel, emergency medical services, and Monterey County sheriff's deputies responded to the 100 block of Struve Road after receiving a report that Baby Angelita, as she is known by investigators, had been found alongside the roadway. Upon arrival, fire personnel confirmed the child was deceased.
An investigation into the newborn's death was launched, and detectives determined that the teen gave birth to Baby Angelita on the side of the road and placed her on the ground before leaving the area.
A forensic examination determined that the newborn had signs of traumatic injury, the sheriff's office said.
"While we understand the public has many questions about the circumstances of that investigation, there are specific details and evidence that we cannot release at this time without potentially jeopardizing the investigation," the sheriff's office said in a statement Sunday.
"Detectives have determined that Sergio Galvez Perez is currently concealing the 14-year-old juvenile and preventing law enforcement from locating her," Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto said. "Anyone who observes Sergio Galvez Perez is asked to contact their local law enforcement agency immediately by dialing 911. Do not approach or attempt to confront him."
