Search and rescue team finds 2 lost hikers safe near Switzer Falls in Angeles National Forest

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST (KABC) -- Two women were found safe by a search and rescue team near Switzer Falls after the pair of hikers got lost in the Angeles National Forest.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the women used the iPhone SOS feature to request help, which provided rescuers with the hiker's precise location.

"Our station texted them to stay put because help was on the way," Mike Leum, a search and rescue group leader for the Sheriff's Department, wrote in a social media post Friday. "I grabbed two trainees and we took off down the trail. During our search the station then told us that they were cold and screaming. We increased the pace."

In a photo released after the rescue, the women were each seen eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich given to them by Leum. He noted that during his career, "dozens of lost souls" have enjoyed such sandwiches.

"When the alert for missing hikers goes out, while I am getting my uniform on, Nancy quickly makes some PB&Js," Leum wrote, referring to his wife.

The rescued hikers "were grateful for our effort, learned a valuable lesson and made it home safe," Leum added. "THIS is why we do this."
