Plow driver charged in deadly youth hockey crash

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Charges have been filed against the driver of a plow truck in a deadly crash involving a youth hockey team from Santa Clarita.

The crash happened on Jan. 29 in Clear Creek County, west of Denver as the Santa Clarita Lady Flyers were on their way to a tournament.

Colorado State Patrol officials said a Department of Transportation snowplow lost control on the westbound Interstate 70, broke through cable rail in the median and collided with a pickup truck before hitting the team's sprinter van in the eastbound lanes.

The impact of the crash sent the van onto its side down a snow-covered embankment.

The driver of the van, identified as Manny Lorenzana, the father of one of the players, died at the scene. Several girls and other family members were seriously hurt.

The driver of the plow, 29-year-old Colton Wiedman, has been charged with nine counts in the crash, according to the Colorado State Patrol. They include:

  • One count of Careless Driving Causing Death

  • Four counts of Careless Driving Causing Serious Bodily Injury

  • Three counts of Careless Driving Causing Bodily Injury

  • One count of Failure to Drive in a Designated Lane

Despite the tragedy, the Lady Flyers went on to win the Western Girls Hockey Championship tournament.
