The West Covina youth pony baseball team is headed across the country to represent their city on an international stage this week.
This is a major accomplishment for the young baseball players. The West Covina team won their 10 and under (10U) Mustang Division, and now they're headed across the country to represent their city and their state at the International 10U Pony World Series in Youngsville, Louisiana.
"It was fantastic," said Andrew Hernandez, a utility player on the West Covina team. "Robinson Moncada, he shut it down for us. He came in, and then everybody on the team, they just came together, and it just went on from there."
Many of the players of the team have been playing together since they were 4 years old. Team president, Kelly Mardorf, says she's seen the boys grow up playing together, and it's been a crazy but enjoyable road to the World Series.
"As the first team from West Covina to make it to the Mustang World Series, besides our 4-year-olds," said Mardorf. "This is an amazing experience for them, and I can't wait for them to get to experience, to play these different teams from different countries and other states, so I'm super excited for them."
After winning Sunday, the team has a tight turnaround before leaving Thursday and playing their first game of the tournament on Friday. In this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, they'll be representing their home, West Covina, and also the entire state of California.
"This is going to be super exciting," said Nicole Banks, the team mom. "They get to face off against China, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Chicago, Virginia. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them to see these kinds of teams."
"The favorite part about being on this team is that how good this team is and how united we are," said Hernandez. "We've been together since when we were 4 or 5 years old, and it's just great."
Hernandez and some of the other young players say they're most excited about visiting the LSU campus and seeing the baseball field.
