INGLEWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- The YMCA is returning to Inglewood for the first time in more than a decade with a new $40 million community center.
On Thursday, the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles and the Inglewood Unified School District revealed its plans for the proposed two-story, 30,000-square-foot facility, which will serve residents across Inglewood, Hawthorne, and Lennox.
"There's been a need," said Mario Valenzuela, the Chief Mission Advancement Officer for the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles. "We've done a lot of community listening sessions, so we've heard it loud and clear from the community that they want a YMCA. They're hungry for opportunities for the youth, the young adults, and for the families."
The facility will feature a CIF-regulation swimming pool, a full-sized CIF-regulation gym, fitness areas, and dedicated spaces for children's activities, group exercise, and community gatherings.
The center will also feature school-age programs, youth sports in partnership with L.A. professional sports leagues, and teen leadership development through Youth & Government and employment opportunities.
Adults will also be able to join different fitness programs and seniors will have access to nutrition services and active older-adult fitness options.
The YMCA previously had a facility in Inglewood before it closed in 2009.
