CULVER CITY, Calif. (KABC) -- Smoke filled Southern California Hospital at Culver City Thursday afternoon, prompting evacuations.

Nearly 400 patients and staff were evacuated outside as firefighters worked to clear the building.

Workers were burning some roofing material when a small fire started, and smoke infiltrated the building.

"It was never black smoke. It was white smoke ... but it could have caused an irritant, and that's why we wanted to evacuate all personnel," said Culver City Fire Capt. Rob Kohlhepp.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area near Washington Boulevard and Delmas Terrace due to heavy traffic.

CORRECTION: Earlier reports identified the hospital as Brotman Medical Center. Eyewitness News has since learned the hospital is Southern California Hospital at Culver City.
