LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The mystery of the giant matchsticks seen around the Los Angeles area has finally been revealed.

It was all part of a viral marketing campaign for the dating app Tinder. The big reveal came Thursday when an oversized matchbox with the giant matchsticks was left on Venice Beach with the Tinder logo on it.

The company left the matchsticks with the hashtag #Moments at various locations throughout the area. It was apparently all part of the dating app's newest feature, "Moments," which allows users to share photos that expire after 24 hours with their matches.

"With 2 billion matches made to date, we're now giving you a whole new way to get to know your matches," Tinder said Thursday on its blog. "With Moments, we're making it easier than ever to tell your story and share your life's moments."

The project was a collaboration with the artist Manny Castro.
