SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Police set up a perimeter in the Chesterfield Square area of South Los Angeles Wednesday morning to search for at least one armed suspect after a short pursuit.

According to the LAPD, officers who were patrolling the area were informed by residents that there was a suspect in the area armed with a gun. When they tried approaching the suspect, the suspect and possibly two other people took off in a vehicle.

Police say the short pursuit ended when the suspects crashed into several cars. One suspect got out, dropped a weapon and was quickly taken into custody.

Another suspect allegedly fired at least one shot at officers, and police returned fire, according to the LAPD. It's unknown if the suspect was hit, but he was able to get away. No officers were injured.

Police asked residents in the area to shelter in place as they search for the gunman.

"If something is out of the ordinary, if they hear something in the garage or other areas, please call 911 immediately," said LAPD Sgt. Frank Preciado.
