Burbank residents set up memorial where man was fatally struck by van

BURBANK, Calif. (KABC) -- Flowers and candles were placed on the sidewalk where 52-year-old Rodolfo Tan was killed Friday night.

The incident was caught on surveillance video and showed the Burbank resident being hit by an out-of-control driver of a Toyota minivan before people nearby rushed to help.

The 33-year-old minivan driver from Glendale had been stabbed in the chest sometime before the crash, according to Burbank police. He was in critical condition.

Police said they will not know what happened until investigators speak with the injured driver, which they have not been able to do so due to his condition.

"I'm just very sorry that it happened," Burbank resident Anita Muro said.

Muro, who uses the nearby bus stop at San Fernando and Olive every day, did not know Rodolfo Tan but added a candle to the memorial Monday afternoon.

"I think this is something that comes from the heart to let people know that there are people that do care about others and their families because I wouldn't want this to happen to any of my family or to me," Muro said.

Members of Tan's family described their loved one as being "one-of-a-kind" and whose passion was baking.

The family started a funding page to help pay for the unexpected funeral expenses, and urged witnesses to come forward with any information that may help police in their investigation.
