State Route 58 set to reopen Wednesday night

BISHOP, Calif. (KABC) -- A stretch of State Route 58 that was covered in layers of mud is set to reopen Wednesday at 8 p.m., California Department of Transportation and California Highway Patrol officials said.

The portion of road was shut down on Oct. 5 after a heavy storm triggered a massive mudslide to flow onto the highway, trapping hundreds of cars.

Immediately after the storm subsided later that night, Caltrans crews began removing the mud and debris.

The closure also caused a traffic domino effect across connecting roads and freeways, especially for truck drivers.

Workers have since cleared and hauled away 75,000 cubic yards of dirt and debris. Crews also drained standing water, cleaned drainage systems, and cleaned and restriped the road.

Crews will continue to clean up the shoulders of the highway. Motorists are advised to slow down and watch out for workers.
