Rare Sumatran tiger newest member at LA Zoo

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A 250-pound endangered Sumatran tiger is the newest member of the Los Angeles Zoo.

The rare tiger, named Castro, Jr. or C.J. for short, was born on March 3, 2013, and he moved from the Sacramento Zoo.

C.J. will debut at the zoo on Friday.

The Sumatran tiger is the smallest of the six remaining subspecies of tiger. They are only found on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The large felines can range in size from 7 to 9-feet long and weigh between 220 and 380 pounds.

Sumatran tigers are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The biggest threats to the species are agricultural habitat destruction, poaching and the killing of tigers that come into contact with villagers.
