Student's social media gun photos investigated as school shooting threat; no threat found

FONTANA, Calif. (KABC) -- Police said Monday there was no threat to Summit High School in Fontana after a student posted photos of guns to his social media accounts.

The 18-year-old student has not been arrested and was expected to stay home with his family Monday. Police have not released the teen's name.

According to Fontana police, the male student took photos of himself holding guns or showing guns on a table and posted them to his Twitter and Instagram accounts on Sunday. Police said one of the photos posted to Instagram showed the student holding multiple guns. According to police, the caption read, "Guess what I'm doing tomorrow?"

The photos prompted concerned classmates and parents to alert police, who went to the teen's home for an investigation. Police concluded that the student was planning to go to a shooting range with his family on Monday. Police said the teen's parents were cooperative and handed over six legally owned handguns and rifles.

The student also apparently apologized on social media. He continued to post on Twitter after police left his house.

"I want everyone to know that I am a (expletive) idiot and the cops just came because I'm a (expletive) dum (expletive)," he tweeted.

The posts with the weapons have been deleted from his account.

Police said they also investigated another person who posted a message on Twitter saying, "I'm the one shooting up the school," as a reply to the 18-year-old student. Police said they found that there was no way for the second person to follow through on the threat. A report was taken, and that person's parents were also cooperative, police said.

Olivier Wong Ah Sun, the school district's chief of staff, said the 18-year-old student's conduct is under investigation.

"The message to any student who thinks that anything like this is funny, or a prank, or anything of that nature: There are very serious consequences attached to threats or pranks of this kind using weapons," he said.

As a precaution, police had an explosive-sniffing dog at the school, in addition to an increase in presence. Classes resumed as planned.
