Community groups are urging the El Monte City Council to pass a sanctuary ordinance they say is needed to protect immigrants.
Following meetings with immigrant-rights groups over the weekend, Mayor Karen Bass and City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto are working to expedite the release of a proposed "sanctuary city" ordinance to the City Council.
According to the report, there are almost 23,000 pending deportation cases awaiting decisions from an immigration judge at the Santa Ana immigration court.
The Los Angeles Republican Party blasted a proposal by three City Council members to make L.A. a "sanctuary city," calling the effort to bar the use of municipal resources for federal immigration enforcement a threat to public safety.
The council previously passed a symbolic resolution declaring Los Angeles a "City of Sanctuary,'' but the motion put forth Tuesday would codify sanctuary policies into municipal law.
New rules backed by several councilmembers would prohibit any city resources, property or personnel from being used for any federal immigration enforcement.
