Facebook and WhatsApp are failing to remove imposter accounts that "have led to tens of thousands of dollars of fraudulent transfers," says Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg.
According to the tech company, about 400,000 users will receive up to $120 to opt out of using Facebook or Instagram for one to six weeks.
Facebook says users will start seeing a company endorsement to products like Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram.
Spyware crafted by a group of hackers-for-hire took advantage of a flaw in the WhatsApp program to remotely hijack phones.
