TORRANCE, Calif. (KABC) -- A man who was allegedly breaking medical equipment inside a room at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance was in critical condition Wednesday morning after being shot by a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy.

Deputies from the South Los Angeles station were working a security detail at the hospital when they were alerted about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday that the patient was breaking equipment and tried to smash a window with a metal medical device, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The hospital is located at 1000 W. Carson St.

A deputy was helping hospital staff move patients to safety when the suspect, a man between 30 and 40, turned his attention to the deputy and a deputy-involved shooting occurred, the department said.

The patient was struck at least once and was immediately treated on scene. He was listed in critical condition, the LASD said.

No deputies, patients or medical staff were injured.

AIR7 HD was over the scene as several patrol vehicles were spotted near the facility.
