LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- More than 1,500 free turkeys were given out to residents in South Los Angeles Saturday morning.

As Thanksgiving approaches, many families are worried about finding a turkey due to supply shortages. With these turkeys, The Salvation Army also hopes to offset the higher prices in markets that many are seeing these days due to inflation.

Families say they are grateful for the donation because many are celebrating Thanksgiving together this year after the pandemic separated them. Local transportation and shipping company CMA CGM helped deliver the turkeys.

President Ed Aldridge said he's glad to be a part of the effort to help those in need.

"We're so excited to kick off our Giving Across America campaign, which really stands as a symbol for the continued commitment that CMA CGM has to the United States, and to really giving back to the communities where many of us live and work," he said.

About 12,000 turkeys will be given out across seven locations in the country next week including Virginia and Washington D.C., according to Aldridge.
