Rio's Law aims to change how first responders and law enforcement interact with people with autism

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A mother is hoping to bring a new law to California that could change how law enforcement officers and first responders interact with people with autism.

The push is being led by Layla Luna, a Calabasas native and founder of Just Bee, a nonprofit organization that advocates for autistic and neurodivergent communities.

After a traffic stop turned into a severe behavioral episode for Luna's son, Rio, she knew that something could be done to better prepare law enforcement officers.

Rio's Law would help first responders identify when an autistic or neurodivergent person is in a vehicle. It's already been enacted in Georgia and South Carolina, and advancing in other states.
