Like so many others, John and Monica Stuhlman lost their Altadena home in the Eaton Fire.
John Stuhlman is a firefighter, paramedic and Inspector II for Los Angeles City Fire and is a Marine veteran. He and his wife Monica had lived in their house for nearly 20 years - and now just the chimney is left standing.
"It's just hard we've lost everything," said Monica Stuhlman. "Every single thing we've owned we've lost."
Now John and Monica are picking up the pieces. When they got a call to come to the L.A. Firemen's Relief Association to receive some gifts, they had no idea that the real surprise would be a brand new car courtesy of Honda.
"This is very humbling. I'll never forget this. The relief has been awesome. The union has been awesome. The credit union has been awesome. The fire foundation has been awesome," said John Stuhlman.
John and Monica say they are so grateful to the community and everyone rallying around them, and of course for their brand-new car. They say while this doesn't replace what they've lost, this is a great step toward healing.
John, Monica and their dog Winston are still staying with friends while they rebuild their lives. But they are hopeful for the future.
