Scorching temperatures across Southern California prompt extreme heat watch

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Southern California is gearing up for another hot week, with even more high pressure building over the region.

While temperatures might already feel hot, even more heat is on the way as high pressure builds in Southern California on Monday and Tuesday.

An Extreme Heat Watch for much of the region begins Tuesday at 10 a.m., with triple-digit, near record-breaking heat in the forecast for many areas. The watch expires at 8 p.m. on Friday.

The heat wave is expected to peak on Thursday, but no significant relief is expected until next week.

Los Angeles and Orange counties on Monday will see plenty of sunshine, with a high of 97 degrees and a low of 72. Temperatures are expected to peak just below triple digits by mid-week.

The valleys and Inland Empire can expect a high of 102 degrees and a low of 73 on Monday. Triple-digit heat is in the forecast the entire week, with a peak of 105 degrees Wednesday through Friday.

Beach communities will be mostly sunny on Monday with a high of 82 degrees and a low of 70. With the heat wave, the beaches will see highs in the mid-80s at the peak.

Mountain communities on Monday will be sunny and hot, with a high of 83 and a low of 54.

Desert areas on Monday can expect a high of 105 degrees and a low of 69. Palm Springs is expected to reach 108 degrees.
