WINNETKA, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man and woman were found shot to death in the backyard of a home in Winnetka on Monday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Detectives said the bodies, both in their 20s, were found in the in the 7800 block of Oso Avenue.

"We understand from family that the dead woman lived at the home, and the man was a recent acquaintance," Capt. Paul Vernon said in a written press release. "Preliminary information would lead us to believe the shooter knew one or both victims."

Police said neighbors reported hearing multiple gun shots at about 11 a.m. and spotted a man running from the scene wearing a white hoodie, green shirt and shorts.

Neighbors told ABC7 they called the mother who lived at the home and told her they heard gun shots. They said the mother came home and found her 23-year-old daughter and her new boyfriend dead in the backyard.

"There were seven gun shots around 10 to 11 (in the morning)," neighbor Warren Tatoy told ABC7. "The mother was crying for about an hour, handcuffed, demanding to see her daughter and she had blood on her. It was just really sad."

The victims were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities stated.

The mother reportedly told neighbors the suspect had chased her daughter down and fatally shot her in the head.

Detectives were canvasing the neighborhood looking for security cameras, hoping that one may have caught the suspect on video.

Anyone with information in this case was urged to call Det. David Peteque of the Valley Bureau Homicide Unit at (818) 374-1934.
