Apartment building collapses in Koreatown

January 19, 2009 12:00:00 AM PST
A 20-by-30-foot portion of an apartment building is in ruins after the two-story, four-unit building collapsed in the 1600 block of S. Westmoreland Avenue on Sunday. At least one person had minor injuries in the collapse, and everyone was evacuated in the building deemed unsafe to live in.

There were three people trapped when the building initially collapsed at about 9 p.m. Two people were able to free themselves, but a third female victim had to be rescued by firefighters. She was reportedly in her bedroom watching TV when the floor fell underneath her.

The woman had cuts to her head and was treated at a local hospital.

Fire crews contained a gas leak during the incident.

Authorities are unsure what may have caused the building to collapse, but neighbors said the building always looked unstable.

Four families were forced to live with family and friends overnight and have been displaced indefinitely.
