Police say that the 44-year-old victim was on his bicycle heading southbound on Glendale Boulevard near Sunset Boulevard when he was struck at about 1 a.m.
The victim died at the scene. The driver of the vehicle left without identifying himself. Fortunately, a witness was able to write down the vehicle's license plate number as he was leaving. He was apprehended Sunday at 3:30 a.m. in Panorama City where he was arrested.
Police identified the man as 22-year-old Alejandro Hidalgo.
At the time of the accident, witnesses saw a car swerving down the street and they believe that Hidalgo may have been drunk. Hidalgo hit the bicyclist and pinned the man between a parked car and his vehicle.
A good samaritan returned to the scene along with others and tried to help the victim.
"I was driving down the street and saw the guy at a distance get hit. I went past him and saw a Mitsubishi, or something like that, and then pulled over to see what was going on. All of us here were calling the police," said a witness.
Detectives say Hidalgo was driving a 2003 Mitsubishi Galant. He was arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter and is being held on $100,000 bail.
The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of family members.
Eyewitness News reported earlier that the victim was a 50-year-old man, police have now confirmed that the man was 44 years old.
