New poll shows Obama support waning

July 21, 2009 5:59:50 AM PDT
A new poll suggests President Barack Obama's support with the American people is slipping. The new ABC News-Washington Post poll shows the president's overall approval ratings dropping to 59 percent, a ten-point drop from their high earlier this spring. It's the first time his approval rating has fallen below 60 percent since he took office.

Thirty-seven percent of Americans now have a negative view of the president's job performance.

Obama's personal approval rating has always fared better than his policies. The same poll shows the president's approval rating on the issue of health care has declined from 57 percent to 49 percent.

President Obama will make another pitch for his health care plan at a prime-time news conference Wednesday and at a town hall meeting in Ohio on Thursday.
