O.C. junior lifeguard laid to rest

July 21, 2009 5:59:50 AM PDT
The junior lifeguard killed in a Huntington Beach boating accident last week has been laid to rest. Funeral services for 11-year-old Allyssa Squirrell were held Tuesday at the Irvine campus of Saddleback Church.

Squirrell died July 14 when she was hit by a lifeguard boat while swimming in the ocean during a training program. Authorities say the driver of the boat never saw her in the water.

An autopsy revealed deep lacerations to her leg and hip. Authorities say she was likely hit by the boat's propeller.

Squirrell's family released a statement thanking the public for their condolences. They also asked people to pray for the driver of the boat.

"We are abundantly aware that there is more than enough pain for us all," the statement read.
