Enduring difficult times early in life, Tyree hopes to make things less difficult for those he helps.
"My life and my struggles have allowed me to help others see things more clearly," explained Tyree. "And I think one thing a lot of people mistake is that everyone, no matter their background or their life, everyone has a struggle."
Since Tyree is interested in a career in the fashion industry, New Visions Foundation helped him with a scholarship because they saw something special in Tyree.
"Creative people sometimes are a little bit self-absorbed," said Paul Cummins, executive director of New Vision Found. "The remarkable thing about him is the combination of creativity and desire to help other people."
Whether it's his work at the shelter, mentoring other students or any of his many other school activities, Tyree gets the same great feeling.
"It makes me feel worth, like you're worth something and that you're here to do something on earth," said Tyree.
He's overcome the turbulence of the past, and is looking at the promise of a bright future. He is our Cool Kid, Tyree Johnson.
