Officials plan to sink 'Floatopia' beach party

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. Last year, the event attracted about 12,000 people to Isla Vista. But this year, officials are shutting down beaches in the area.

There will also be extra patrols and strict enforcement of local laws. Authorities are asking people not to show up.

"With Facebook a lot of people are putting the information on. They are just posting it and its unfortunately spreading around, and it is a lot of false information," said Lt. Brian Olmstead, Santa Barbara Sheriff's Dept. "The information is going out that Floatopia is going to happen and there's going to be access, but there's not going to be any access to the beach on that day."

Officials say the decision to limit beach access was over public safety concerns and to help prevent environmental damage.
