New taxiway opens at Los Angeles Int'l Airport

LOS ANGELES Two LAX fire trucks greeted Qantas Flight 11 as it landed from Sydney, Australia, and used the taxiway.

The new north-south taxiway was designed to accommodate the weight of A380s and similar jumbo aircraft.

The taxiway includes a bridge that was built over a city street and can accommodate aircraft weighing more than 1 million pounds.

Airport officials say the taxiway was complete six weeks ahead of schedule.
