LOS ANGELES --
A 1-million-pound Qantas Airbus A380 superjumbo jet became the first aircraft to travel the just-completed, $88-million, 3,437-foot Crossfield Taxiway Monday at Los Angeles International Airport.Two LAX fire trucks greeted Qantas Flight 11 as it landed from Sydney, Australia, and used the taxiway.
The new north-south taxiway was designed to accommodate the weight of A380s and similar jumbo aircraft.
The taxiway includes a bridge that was built over a city street and can accommodate aircraft weighing more than 1 million pounds.
Airport officials say the taxiway was complete six weeks ahead of schedule.
