Maxine Waters hoping for a quick trial

August 5, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
Los Angeles area congresswoman, Rep. Maxine Waters, is asking a U.S. House of Representatives ethics panel to hold her trial before the November congressional elections.Waters has been charged with ethics violations for allegedly asking regulators to help a bank in which her husband had a financial interest.

Waters denies any wrongdoing and said she has not violated House rules. She has also asked the House ethics committee to release the specific charges against her.

Washington Democratic strategists are hesitant about Waters' request for a quick hearing. They're hoping to avoid a sensational trial going into an election in which Republicans are expected to make major gains.

Party leaders are also troubled by ethics charges against fellow long time Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel of New York.
