Eiffel Tower evacuated following bomb threat

PARIS Approximately 2,000 people were cleared from the monument as police checked the 1,063-foot tower for suspicious objects.

Tourists and curious Parisians continued to stick around the nearby sidewalks despite the bomb scare. Several police vehicles and officers stood guard under the tower.

Later the same day, the French media reported that a second tourist hub, the Saint-Michel subway station near Notre Dame Cathedral, had also been evacuated due to a similar threat. Paris police said they had no information about this threat.

The Saint-Michel subway was the target of a terrorist attack in 1995 that killed eight and injured scores of people.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
