Delta passengers can now auction their seats

January 13, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
Delta Airlines is allowing passengers to auction their seats on overbooked flights. If a flight is overbooked, passengers checking in at an airport kiosk or online will see a screen asking if they would like to submit a bid for the value of a travel voucher they'd take to be bumped to another flight.

Passengers enter a dollar amount.

Delta accepts lower bids first and says gate agents can still give out additional compensation, like hotel vouchers, if the next flight isn't until the following day.
