Budget cuts target tsunami warning center

WASHINGTON

The plan was passed by the Republican-controlled House last month. The cuts could result in furloughs and rolling closures of National Weather Service offices, according to a union representing the workers.

The organization argued that the bill will affect the center's ability to issue warnings similar to those issued after Friday's magnitude-8.9 earthquake in Japan.
