Deer comes to distraught goose's rescue

BUFFALO, N.Y.

Only in this story, Prince Charming comes in a very different package. This prince is actually a deer.

Mother Goose is really a goose in New York who lost her lifelong partner and guardian.

She was nesting by herself in a cemetery urn when the deer showed up to stand guard over the goose and her eggs.

The deer spends its day near the urn and gets in the way of anyone or anything that tries to approach the goose.

How the deer knew the goose needed a protector is anyone's guess.

"If anything, normally the geese are more aggressive especially at this time," said Craig Cygan, who patrols the area using goose-chasing border collies. "They're aggressive towards people approaching their nest, and you would think that they would be aggressive towards a deer. And for some reason they've got a bonding relationship, and it seems to be working."

Only time will tell if the two will stay together after the goslings hatch.
