Some sex offenders in California would no longer have to register for life under a bill moving through the State Assembly.

Instead, the measure would create a three-tiered system where sex offenders would register for 10 years, 20 years or for life.

California is one of only four states that requires lifetime registration for all sex offenders.

The bill's author said the tiered system would help focus limited resources on those most likely to re-offend.
