A bill requiring every dog or cat adopted from an animal shelter to be implanted with microchips has passed the California State Senate.

The bill is supported by the Humane Society, and others, as a way to improve the odds of reuniting lost pets with their owners.

Some pet owners believe the microchips can cause tumors and cancer in animals.

The bill still needs Assembly approval.
