Californians may have a chance to decide the future of the state's death penalty after all.

A group called Safe California is launching a ballot initiative to put the issue before voters.

The group is pushing to abolish the death penalty based on the cost and stress to victims' families.

It cites a recent study showing California has spent $4 billion to execute 13 people.

A bill proposing to get rid of the death penalty died in a legislative committee last week.
