Crews responded to the fire just after 5:30 p.m. at 8,000 block of Columbus Avenue at Chase Street, near Roscoe and Sepulveda boulevards.
The blaze appeared to be burning near a carport and several palm trees were seen in flames. Many residents escaped in their cars to prevent them from being destroyed.
There were no initial reports of injuries and cause of the fire was not immediately known.
