The blaze erupted around 9 p.m. and was burning in rugged terrain. It charred about 10 acres.
Choppers did rare night drops on the fire as hand crews battled it on the ground. Authorities said no buildings were threatened.
Firefighters said they hope to knock it down overnight before Saturday's scorching temperatures really heat things up.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
