Alhambra police say a man living on Midwickhill Drive returned home around 3 p.m. Monday and found the house had been burglarized.
Investigators say the victims are an African-American family. According to police, every part of the interior of the house was damaged. Along with the broken furniture and appliances and damage to the walls, racial epithets were spray-painted throughout the home.
A sergeant investigating the case says he's been in the force for over 20 years and has never seen anything like this.
What also has police concerned is that weapons belonging to the family were taken. Authorities say the weapons were registered.
"The family wasn't able to determine exactly what was missing because the house is in such disarray, but we do know for a fact four handguns are missing from inside the house," said Sgt. Jerry Johnson with the Alhambra Police Department.
According to residents in the area, the people who rented the home were great neighbors.
"It's incredible. This is just a low-key, safe neighborhood. For something like this to happen, it just breaks my heart," said neighbor Guy Hashimo.
