Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation, but this one erupted from the sun on Wednesday and was considered "mid-level."
NASAs Solar Dynamics Observatory captured imagery of the event, and shows the flare in a blend of two wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet lights.
The agency says harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through the Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans, but it can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and other communication signals travel.
