ONTARIO, Calif. (KABC) -- A homeowner shot and killed a burglar attempting to break into his Ontario home on Sunday, according to police.

Officers said they responded to a call for an attempted burglary at about 5:15 a.m. in the 800 block of West Mission Boulevard.

Ontario police said the suspect attempted to break into the home and was immediately confronted by the homeowner in the entryway.

During a short struggle, the homeowner shot the suspect once, according to police.

Officials said the suspect, a 26-year-old man from Los Angeles, died in the entryway of the home.

Since it appeared to be a case of self-defense, police stated the homeowner was not taken into custody.

Police urged anyone with information about the incident to call Ontario detectives at (909) 395-2777. If you would like to remain anonymous, you can call We-Tip at (800) 782-7463.
