What's next for Carson after failed NFL stadium bid?

CARSON, Calif. (KABC) -- While it's an exciting time for Inglewood with the announcement that the Rams will build a stadium in its city, it's a different story in Carson where a stadium proposal was rejected by NFL owners on Tuesday.

The proposed $1.7 billion stadium would've been home to the Chargers and Raiders, but NFL owners decided to go with Rams owner Stan Kroenke's $1.8 billion stadium plan in Inglewood.

Though Carson was not selected as the newest home of the NFL, city officials said much good has come from the process.

"Whether it's the NFL, or an outlet mall, or a massive mix-use residential project, our residents know that finally something is going to be built because it's finally shovel ready," Carson Mayor Albert Robles said.

Officials said the NFL bidding process put a spotlight on Carson and showed developers the opportunities that exist in the city.

Rams fans celebrated after it was announced the franchise would return to Los Angeles on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016.

Disney CEO Bob Iger presented the case for the Carson stadium project on behalf of the Chargers and Raiders.

A six-member NFL relocation committee recommended the joint bid between the Raiders and Chargers in Carson, which excited Carson officials.

"Then the committee recommendation came in and I got really excited," Robles said.

But ultimately, NFL owners favored the Inglewood project and passed the proposal with a 30-2 vote, leaving many business owners in Carson heartbroken.

"It would have been amazing having those opportunities, having so many people to come to the city of Carson," Darrow's New Orleans Grill owner Norwood Clark said.

While NFL owners voted for Kroenke's Inglewood project, they also voted to allow the Chargers the option to join the Rams in Inglewood. The team has one year to reach a decision.

If the Chargers decline to join the Rams in Inglewood, the Raiders will then have the option and must decide within a year.

Though it may not be in Carson, Robles said he is excited to have the NFL back in the Greater Los Angeles area.

"The good thing is that we are going to have professional football here in Southern California. Our 20 year drought is coming to an end," Robles said.
