After days of storms throughout Christmas week, several Southern California communities are dealing with storm damage from the rain, high winds, flooding and mudslides.

The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed that an EF-0 tornado touched down in Boyle Heights on Christmas Day, leaving behind damaged roofs, broken windows and debris.

After a historic holiday storm, sunshine and dry conditions are finally returning to Southern California this weekend. But the break from wet weather could be short-lived as more rain is set to arrive New Year's Day.

Newsom declares state of emergency for SoCal

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday proclaimed a state of emergency in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties as yet another storm batters the region with heavy rain.

This comes as several communities in burn scar areas are under evacuation warnings due to the looming threat of mudslides and debris flows.

"California is acting early and decisively to do all we can to get ahead of dangerous winter storms. The state has pre-positioned resources, activated emergency authorities, and we are working closely with local partners to protect communities and keep Californians safe," Newsom said in a statement.

The proclamation was also made for San Diego and Shasta counties.

Some areas could see 50 mph winds and the NWS said that although it's unlikely, a brief spin up tornado is possible.

Angeles Crest Highway north of La Cañada Flintridge shut down

The Angeles Crest Highway just north of La Cañada Flintridge to the Clear Creek Information Station has been shut down due to hazardous conditions, the sheriff's department said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Crescenta Valley Station shared a post on X, asking drivers to avoid the area.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and plan alternate routes," the agency wrote. "Road conditions can change rapidly, and attempting to bypass closures puts both motorists and first responders at risk."
