SOUTH GATE, Calif. (KABC) -- A man has been shot and killed in the 4900 block of Mason Street in South Gate at an auto body shop, authorities said.

Los Angeles County sheriff's homicide detectives responded to the scene to assist South Gate police, who found a male adult dead around 3:08 p.m., authorities said.

The shooting happened in an area with several auto body shops and tow yards. Authorities believe the man was shot inside one of the businesses.

The suspect in the shooting is at large, according to investigators. The identity of the victim has not been released, but he is believed to be around 40 years old, authorities said.

There were witnesses to the shooting, investigators said.

"Apparently somebody drove up here, walked into one of these auto body shops and shot somebody," said Det. John Corina of the LASD's homicide bureau.

Corina said detectives were still in the process of figuring out the victim's relationship to the business and the suspect. They hope surveillance video from nearby businesses will help solve the case.

No further details on the death were immediately provided.
