CORONA, Calif. (KABC) -- The body of an abandoned infant was discovered Friday afternoon in Corona, authorities said.

According to a statement from the Corona Police Department, officers were dispatched shortly after 2:30 p.m. to the area of Cajalco Road and the 15 Freeway after bystanders made the shocking discovery.

When the officers arrived at the scene "they were directed to the location of the infant" and confirmed the child was deceased, the news release said. Coroner's officials were summoned to the location and took custody of the body.

The cause of death was under investigation.

"We literally have no information - where the baby came from, who the baby belongs to - nothing, we have nothing to go off of right now," said Tobias Kouroubacalis of Corona PD.

Detectives hope the public may be the key to find the person responsible in the tragic case.

"Just trying to figure out who may have been in the area at the time, or if anybody knows of somebody who was pregnant recently and isn't pregnant anymore and maybe the baby isn't around," Kouroubacalis added. "We're looking for the public's help to help figure out where the baby came from."
