CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. (KABC) -- At least one person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash that shut down the eastbound 60 Freeway in the City of Industry early Sunday morning.
The crash occurred around 4:26 a.m. east of Fairway Drive. The California Highway Patrol said it began as a two-vehicle collision that involved a white SUV. A third vehicle was in the HOV lane when it collided with the white SUV, causing the SUV to catch on fire.
According to investigators, the passenger of the SUV and the driver of another car got out of their vehicles to try to help the SUV driver. As they were attempting to help the driver get out, a silver Mitsubishi traveling in the HOV lane struck them.
The CHP said a man was pronounced dead at the scene. At least five people were transported to the hospital. Three were said to be in critical condition.
All eastbound lanes were closed as authorities investigated the crash.
