COSTA MESA, Calif. (KABC) -- Three Costa Mesa schools were damaged after being hit by a summer downpour that flooded classrooms.

TeWinkle Middle School, California Elementary School and Killybrooke Elementary School all incurred damage.

Nearly 20 classrooms at Killybrooke sustained heavy water damage. Students had to be transported to Costa Mesa High School for class on Thursday as cleanup continues.

At TeWinkle, several ceiling tiles fell down and water flooded nine classrooms, including the computer lab and library. Eight rooms at California Elementary School incurred water damage.

The flash flooding happened around 4 p.m. as construction crews were working on the roofs and air-conditioning units on Wednesday. No children were injured because they were all out of class by that time.

All three schools are open, and the district's superintendent expects classes should be back to normal by Monday. There was a sign posted at Killybrooke stating no preschool classes will be held Thursday and Friday.
