Bacteria may link to infant disease

May 30, 2008 7:03:01 AM PDT
Experts in Britain have made a breakthrough discovery about sudden infant death syndrome known as SIDS, the leading cause of death in children under the age of one.SIDS is characterized by an unexplained death in an otherwise healthy baby.

Researchers now say certain bacteria may be linked to the disease. Of 470 babies who died of SIDS, nearly half of them had staphylococcus aureus and e-coli in their lungs or spleen.

However, researchers still don't know whether bacteria is the cause of SIDS or just another potential risk factor.
